Veterinary Surgical Specialists of NM
Peter Schwarz, DVM,
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons

Dr. Schwarz Dr. Schwarz is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from the University of Missouri Veterinary School in 1979. He completed an internship and surgical residency at the renowned Animal Medical Center in New York City. After completing a one-year surgical fellowship at Colorado State University, he joined the faculty at CSU in 1984. Dr. Schwarz received his Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1985. In 1989, Dr. Schwarz was promoted and received tenure at CSU.
    Dr. Schwarz has become a frequent lecturer at both national and international meetings and has authored over one hundred scientific articles, book chapters, and proceedings. Dr. Schwarz brings over 20 years worth of veterinary surgical training, experience, and expertise to this practice.

Larie Allen, DVM,
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Dr. Allen Dr. Larie Allen is a native of Florida. She completed her undergraduate studies at Indiana University. Dr. Allen obtained her DVM from the University of Florida in 1993. She went on to complete an internship at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Allen worked in private practice in California until her residency at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. She pursued further training in surgical oncology by completing a fellowship at Colorado State University in 1999. Dr. Allen received her Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1999.
    Dr. Allen moved to New Mexico in 2000 at which time she joined the Veterinary Surgical Specialists practice. She enjoys hiking, skiing and other outdoor activities.

Internal Medicine
Jennifer Strasser, DVM,
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine
Dr. Strasser Dr. Jennifer Strasser was born in California and grew up in Colorado and New Mexico. She graduated from El Dorado High School, UNM, and Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Services. Dr. Strasser completed an internship at North Carolina State University and her residency at the University of California, Davis. She received her Diplomat status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2006. Dr. Strasser joined the Veterinary Specialists of NM in 2005 at the completion of her residency.
    Her personal interests include sailing, hiking, snowshoeing and rock climbing.

Brent Megarry, DVM
Dr. Megarry is a native of Minnesota. He attended the University of Arizona and the University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences. Dr. Meggary graduated from the University of Minnesota, Magna Cum Laude in 1987. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. He practiced small animal, equine, surgery and production medicine until the year 2000. Dr. Megarry has practiced exclusively small animal emergency medicine and surgery since 2000.
    Brent’s personal interest include his horses and traveling.

Jennifer Garb, DVM
Dr. Jennifer Garb Dr. Jenny Garb is a native of South Africa but grew up in Israel, where she served in the Israel Defense Force for two years. After completing her military service she traveled extensively through Africa, and worked for many years as the clinic manager of the Cat Welfare Society of Israel.
    She obtained her undergraduate degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 2003. Prior to joining the Albuquerque Animal Emergency Clinic in 2005, she practiced small animal emergency medicine in Houston, Texas. Her professional interests include small animal toxicology and critical care. She is currently overseeing our small animal blood donor program, and hopes to create a blood bank that will be available to local veterinarians.

Dan Dugger, DVM
Dr. Dan Dugger Dr. Dugger joined the AAEC during 2006. He received his Bachelor of Science in 2001 from Brigham Young University and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 2005. His professional interests are emergency and critical care, internal medicine and oncology.
    Dan’s personal interest include martial arts, fly-fishing, snowboarding, and camping.






Stephen Deeb, DVM
Dr. Dr. Deeb Dr. Deeb is an experienced practitioner in the field of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, having worked in emergency settings in Denver, Colorado, as well as here in Albuquerque. He joined the AAEC staff in February 2006.
    Prior to that, he served on active duty for four years with the US Army Veterinary Corps at Kirtland AFB, NM, and at Ft Bliss, Texas, where he cared for over 150 Working Dogs belonging to the Department of Defense and the US Customs and Border Protection Agency. Dr Deeb earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 2001, and also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Georgia.

Physical Therapy
Laura Hady, DVM

Dr. Hady Dr. Laura Hady is a New Mexico native who received her DVM in 1995 from Colorado State University. She worked in clinical practice for eight years starting with large animals and slowly moving over to small animals. In private practice, she found that she ended up with the more chronic cases, those that needed special attention and lots of family communication. She had already started taking animal rehabilitation classes, but did not know how it would fit into a busy practice.
    Once her own dog needed rehabilitation for a spinal fracture, she knew it was her calling to help owners and their pets through the physical and emotional highs and lows of recovery. She received her certification in canine rehabilitation (CCRP) in 2003. She works mostly with dogs, but also enjoys working with cats, rabbits, and small ruminants (goats and llamas).


Dermatology
Thomas P. Lewis, DVM,
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Dermatology

Dr. Thomas Lewis, DVM and Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Dermatology, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders which afflict dogs, cats and horses. Dr. Lewis has a very mobile practice. His practice services six western states in his quest to ease the discomforts of animals with skin diseases and allergies. He see patients from California, Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico, West Texas and Utah.
      After attending Mesa Community College, Dr. Lewis attended and graduated from Arizona Sate University with a Bachelors degree in 1982. In 1986 he graduated from Colorado State University- School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed his residency in dermatology in private practice. Upon completion of all requirements, he was awarded board certification in 1991 by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology.
      Dr. Lewis is a published authority on veterinary dermatology. His articles have been published in numerous scientific journals, including "The New England Journal of Medicine" and "The Journal of Veterinary Dermatology."

Anthea Schick, DVM

Dr. Anthea Elliott Schick, DVM, joined Dr. Lewis' staff at the Dermatology Clinic for Animals in 2003.
      Dr. Schick grew up in both Northern California and Flagstaff, Arizona, and was awarded a Bachelors of Arts and Science degree at the University of California at Berkeley in 1998. Dr. Schick attended veterinary school at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, graduating in 2002. While at Cornell, she worked with some of the leading veterinary dermatologists in the country and decided to pursue a dermatology career. She completed a one-year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at a private referral practice in New Mexico, where the majority of her cases were animals with skin problems. While completing her internship, she saw cases with Dr. Lewis at his practice in Albuquerque, where she gained experience with a variety of unusual dermatologic problems. Dr. Schick began a three-year residency position in dermatology at the Dermatology Clinic for Animals in 2003. She is currently in her third year of the residency and plans to sit for the American College of Veterinary Dermatology board examination in August, 2006.
      Dr. Schick is currently working on a research project about canine ear disease and has given many lectures to veterinarians in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas about veterinary dermatology. Dr. Schick enjoys all aspects of veterinary dermatology but has a special interest in allergies and breed associated skin diseases.
      Dr. Schick practices in several western states including Arizona ( Scottsdale and Gilbert), New Mexico (Albuquerque and Santa Theresa) and Utah ( Salt Lake City). She is married and lives in Tempe, Arizona, with a very allergic Chihuahua, a three-legged cat and three other ‘normal’ pets.

Susan Ericka-Argeres, DVM, CVA
Dr. Ericka-Argeres Dr. Argeres was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and moved to Albuquerque with her family when she was three. She's very close to her mom, dad, older brother, and older sister.
      Growing up, she had a menagerie in her bedroom. At age eight, she decided that she was going to become a veterinarian. Her education consisted of Albuquerque public schools, then down to NMSU for a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1990. She attended veterinarian school at Fort Collins, Colorado, obtaining her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University in 1994. She practiced there until May, 2000, when she moved back to Albuquerque to be of service to her parents and to work at a full-service veterinary hospital.
      Prior to veterinary school, she had always felt that animals deserved the option of holistic care. In 2001, she started training to become a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. She obtained her CVA in 2005. She opened Argeres Animal Alternatives in 2003, a business consisting of acupuncture and massage on pets. She makes house calls, but also does contract veterinary medicine at various clinics in Albuquerque and surrounding area.
      Her friends describe her as kind, honest, down to earth, witty, straightforward, and compassionate. Good communication and conversation are important to her
