The job of a veterinarian is challenging. Unlike human doctors, the veterinarian is required to learn the anatomy and physiology of a number of species ranging from mammals to birds. Most veterinarians limit their practice to certain types of animals.
Most veterinarians practice as general vets who usually take care of small animals like dogs and cats. Many also treat parrots and small reptiles. Some small animal vets specialize in treating a single species. For instance, feline specialists are becoming quite common.

My site has been mostly about veterinary issues since I spent such a long time in the field. However, today, I decided to talk a little bit about my time as a vet and I thought I’d start with my dogs. I had two dogs of my own and they were incredible when it came to companionship. Forget surveillance and security cameras for the home, these guys heard and saw everything. Even if you were driving in one of those hard-to-hear hybrids, I imagine my two dogs would have no trouble detecting your approach.
The bigger of the two was a dog named Otis. He was a Great Dane with a splotch of black masking his right eye. The other was Glenn, a pitbull that I adopted after I found him nosing about my backyard. I don’t know where he came from or who owned him first but he needed a home and I just couldn’t say no to that face. Not to mention that, despite how much negative attention the pitbulls get in the media and in our society, they really are quite kind and gentle dogs.
Anyways, those were my two dogs that kept me company during my time in veterinary school. And, to my regular readers, don’t worry. This won’t be a regular thing but I will, every now and again, take a moment to look back on where I came from as vet.

Most veterinarians can perform simple, basic surgeries such as spaying or neutering, and clipping ears and tails. These are considered elective surgeries when they are done for non-therapeutic reasons at the owner’s request. For more complicated procedures, a surgical specialist is needed.
There are many different types of specialized veterinarians, but not all of them perform surgery. A qualified veterinary surgeon must undergo three years of extensive training and pass state and national board exams, in addition to the four years of study and certifications needed to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

Everyone knows that they should take their pets to the veterinarian when their cat or dog seems ill. This should not be the only time a vet is visited though. All pets need to be checked by a veterinarian every six months and this can keep pets healthy for years.
The first time a veterinarian should be seen is when a new pet is brought home. Puppies and kittens will need there first immunizations and older cats and dogs will need to get booster shots. Vets will look at all body areas of Read the rest of this entry »

Making an appointment to see a Vet is not always necessary, although usually this entails extreme conditions.
If you do need to see a Vet, you usually will have to book an appointment should the reason of the appointment be minor. If your animal has a slight injury, for example, that can be treated later on without any serious consequences, you will be required to make an appointment. Also, making appointments for things such as routine checkups and general maintenance is also required due to the lack of any real emergency. However, if Read the rest of this entry »

As a pet owner, one of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is who you will choose to be your pet’s veterinarian. Here are a few things you should look for when reviewing vets in your area.
First of all, does the veterinarian own their own practice or do they work for a large facility? How long have they been practicing veterinary medicine? If at any point they are unavailable, do they have a Read the rest of this entry »
